Hulu Plus or Hulu Minus?

What exactly is the difference between the free Hulu.com and the $9.99/month Hulu Plus? Well, that depends on where you are going to watch your TV shows. If you plan on watching on your computer, or connect your computer to your television, then you can watch all of the Hulu.com content, plus additional shows and episodes from Hulu Plus. On the other hand, if you plan on watching Hulu Plus on your iPhone, iPod, iPad, Roku, or other device, then you will be restricted to just the Hulu Plus content.

In the following table, I started with all of the TV shows on Hulu.com that are current shows. Of course, Hulu.com also has hundreds of other shows in its archives that are no longer being broadcast. I then added to the list all of the Hulu Plus content. The third column shows whether Hulu Plus gives you a "Season Ticket," which allows you to watch every episode from the current season of that show.

Whether or not you will want to pay an additional $9.99 a month for Hulu Plus will depend on whether you want to watch the few shows that it offers, and are willing to pay for the privilege of watching advertisements. Hulu has been adding more and more advertisements, and be aware that unlike with a DVR, there is no way to skip over them.

Previous seasons of many of these shows are available streaming from Netflix on all of the same devices, and for just $8.99 a month, you can watch those shows ad-free, as well as have one DVD at a time from Netflix's enormous library. Or, for just 99 cents an episode, you can rent many TV shows in HD from iTunes using your computer, iDevice or Apple TV. Given the sparseness of the Hulu Plus library and the incessant advertisements, it is hard to justify spending the money on it.
